Nov. 10 ceremony among programs in recognition of WWI Armistice anniversary

WWI MemorialThe Atlantic City Free Public Library and City of Atlantic City are collaborating with Stockton University, veterans organizations and active military members on a series of programs in recognition of the 100th anniversary of the Armistice of 1918 that ended World War I.
The public is invited to a remembrance ceremony at the Stockton University Atlantic City Academic Center on Saturday, Nov. 10 at 11 a.m. The ceremony, which will be held in the Fannie Lou Hamer Event Room, will include a posting of the colors by the 177th Fighter Wing, New Jersey Air National Guard, performance by the Stockton Show Choir, reading of the poem “In Flanders Fields” and guest speakers.
The keynote speaker will be Colonel Bradford R. Everman, the Commander of the 177th Fighter Wing. Colonel Everman is a command pilot with more than 3,000 flying hours, including contingency and combat sorties in support of Operation Southern Watch, Operation Northern Watch, Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.
Following the remembrance ceremony, attendees will be invited to walk to O’Donnell Park for a guided tour inside the World War I Memorial. The memorial houses the “Liberty in Distress” sculpture, created in memory of city residents who served in the war.
Limited parking is available at the Stockton Atlantic City Academic Center. The fee is $7 for the first two hours and $3 for each additional hour.

In addition to the Nov. 10 remembrance ceremony and monument tour, more events and an exhibit are planned:
• World War I Film Series on Saturday, Nov. 10, 17, 24 at 1 p.m. at the Atlantic City Free Public Library – The library will show Paths of Glory (Nov. 10), War Horse (Nov. 17) and All Quiet on the Western Front (Nov. 24). The films will be played in the Main Library’s second-floor meeting room.
• World War I Talk on Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2018 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at Stockton University’s Main Campus in Galloway – Cape May County Freeholder Jeffrey L. Pierson, a retired Brigadier General who spent 42 years in the military, will discuss World War I, the National Guard and how New Jersey reacted to the war. The lecture will take place in the Board of Trustees Room in the Campus Center.
• Virtual Exhibit at Stockton Atlantic City and online – Beginning Nov. 10, a virtual exhibit featuring photos from World War I, the Atlantic City WWI Monument and “Liberty in Distress” statue will be on display at Stockton Atlantic City and online at www.atlanticcityexperience.org. The photos are from the library’s Atlantic City Heritage Collections.

The library and City of Atlantic City recognize Stockton University; 177th Fighter Wing, New Jersey Air National Guard; Atlantic City Police Department; Patrick Carney, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs; Michael R. Francis, Veterans Liaison for Congressman Frank A. LoBiondo; Freeholder Pierson; and Patricia Tatum, Kenneth B. Hawkins Post 61 for their contributions in the planning of these events.
